Using OVID to Find Full-Text

YourJournals&OVID offers access to a set of authoritative and well used full text allied health journals with an emphasis on nursing. Up to three on campus users can work with OVID at one time. OVID offers unlimited html print outs, and many of the journals are well suited for care plans and other nursing assignments. If EBSCO's CINAHL does not work or you need full text, then YourJournals&OVID is a great place to turn.

  1. OVID GALILEO database is available via on and off campus via GALILEO.
  2. OVID presents you with a choice of half a dozen databases. Only one of these, YourJournals&OVID offers full text access.
  3. Choose YourJournals&OVID.
  4. The most important part of any search happens before you ever sit down at the keyboard. For example if your search is drug resistant staphylococcus. The most important concepts are staphylococcus and resistance. (The ending on this word varies and with OVID you sometimes have to try multiple endings in different searches.)

Therefore your search has two concepts. Your search statement becomes staphylococcus AND resistance. Note: the AND is not a word but a logical operator that tells OVID that you want articles on both staphylococcus and resistance.
  5. Type in the search statement, and click the light turquoise oval that says perform search.
  6. Alternatively, you can search for one concept and then for your second concept, in this case staphylococcus and then resistance. Then click on the blue and yellow overlapping circle combine icon. Check off the box next to each concept you wish to combine. Make sure the little scroll box is set on AND and click the light turquoise oval that says continue.
  7. To narrow your search, you can click on the magnifying glass icon for search fields.
  8. Type one of your search terms in the text entry box and then click on whichever fields you want to search. Because Ovid lacks traditional subject headings, keyword (kw) and/or title (ti) work best.
  9. Then click the light turquoise perform search oval. Sometimes one form of a word works better than others. You may need to try several restricted searches to get good results. You also need to search each concept of your search separately. For staphylococcus AND resistance, you need to search staphyloccus and then search resistance if you want restricted searches.
  10. If you have a two concept search, you will need to repeat the restricted search for each concept. Then click the blue and yellow overlapping circle combine icon. Check off the boxes for your successful searches. Make sure the little scroll box says AND, and click the light turquoise continue oval that says continue.
  11. To see full text of an article, click on the blue words, OVID full text.
  12. To move among the screens of results, click on the greyish purple next and previous results arrows at the top of the results.
  13. To print an article click on your browser's print icon or select Print under File in the top menu of any browser. All OVID full text articles are html, requiring no special software. They also have complete citations at the top of the page.
  14. To start another search, click on the light blue main search page rectangle at the top of the results screen.
  15. OVID sessions time out after a few minutes. To restart yours, find OVID in GALILEO.
  16. To end an OVID session, click the home icon on your browser or close your browser window.
