Using Highwire Full Text Journals

Highwire Press at Stanford.edu hosts many free full text, journals with usually only the last year embargoed. You can also reach Highwire through GALILEO, and though the search interface is a bit tricky, it is still a great place to find primary literature life science articles in all areas except ecology. For ecology searches, try Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also available through GALILEO.

  1. To acccess Highwire in GALILEO, choose the amber tab labeled science and technology. Select the Biology. Click on H. Click on Highwire Press.
  2. Before you start searching, look carefully at your topic. It should be a well focused question. Your topic probably consists of two concepts, for example human AND cloning for human cloning or vancomycin AND bacteria for vancomycin resistant bacteria. Searches with two concepts generally yield better results than searches with three. Since Highwire Press does not have subject headings, it is a good idea to list synonyms for concepts that are part of your topic.
  3. Click on advanced search which is written in a small charcoal grey box in the border on the top of the screen. Look carefully. It may be a bit hard to find.
  4. You next see a search form with a large number of boxes to fill in.
  5. Find the box labeled Abstract|Title in the fourth row of the section labeled Specify Author, Keywords.
  6. Type in your search. But select the circle next to all instead of writing in the AND.
  7. Set the latest date in the Limit Results area (about half way down the screen) to the previous year. This cuts out most embargoed items.
  8. Also set Specify Journals to Search to Highwire-hosted journals.
  9. Then click the search button at the bottom of the boxes.
  10. Highwire Press gives you a page of article references in grey and white stripes. NOT ALL THE ARTICLES WILL BE FREELY AVAILABLE. Those that are say so in a square below a picture of the journal cover.
  11. Highwire displays articles in groups of ten (10). Small blue next ten and previous ten let you move between groups. The scroll bar helps you move within groups.
  12. To see your article, click on full text or pdf.
  13. To print an html (full text) article, use the print button or print in the file menu of your browser. To print a PDF article, click Adobe Acrobat's print icon.
  14. To start a new search click the advanced search in the small charcoal grey rectangle on the left side of the heading at the top of the page.
